The city's cultural heritage bureau has been using money received from the National Cultural Heritage Administration for preservation of the wells in recent years. More than 7 million yuan (around $1.1 million) has been used to repair and reinforce the karez irrigation system in Turpan this year.

"Protecting the wells is about preserving our history and culture," said Li Gang, a researcher. "The ancient irrigation system also helps boost the local tourism. We plan to renovate another 15 karez wells next year."
