The rise of China's aviation industry, in the field of large aircrafts, has depended on the self-reliance and innovation of science and technology, according to a key figure in the sector.

Tang Changhong, chief designer of China's Y-20 strategic transport plane and a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said on Saturday that the core essence of self-reliance on science and technology is the capability of building whatever the country needs.

"On the path of constructing powerful equipment, we will make all-out efforts to develop new aviation products to make new contributions to the national rejuvenation," he said.

According to Tang, this year marks the 10th anniversary of Y-20's maiden flight and the aircraft has been to Europe, Africa and Oceania. The colossal plane has become a symbol of China's power, he said.

China's domestically designed jetliner, C919, is another token of the rising status of the nation's aviation manufacturing sector, the designer said.

"The C919 successfully completed all of its test flights last year and has started to conduct trial operations. Its emergence has put an end to the absolute dominance of large foreign jetliners in Chinese airspace," Tang said, noting that China now also has the AG600 large amphibious plane and the YY-20 aerial refuelling aircraft.

"The fleet of Chinese large aircraft continues to expand, symbolizing our country's overall strength," he said.
