SAN FRANCISCO - TikTok was once again available for download in the Apple app store and Google Play store in the United States on Thursday.

The video-sharing app, used by 170 million Americans, went dark shortly before a US law requiring ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to sell the app to an American company or face a ban took effect on Jan 19.

Apple and Google had removed TikTok from their US app stores as hosting or distributing the app in the country could result in penalties under the law.

The app resumed operations after US President Donald Trump announced that he would delay enforcing the ban. On his first day in office on Jan 20, he signed an executive order extending the law's deadline by 75 days to April 5.

Despite being removed from the two digital marketplaces for nearly a month, TikTok had recovered about 90 percent of the traffic compared with the pre-shutdown level by late January, according to data from Cloudflare Radar.
