The accident took place at about 2 pm at a nitrogen workshop in the plant in northeast Beijing's Wangjing area, witnesses said.
The three women were all workers in the plant. One suffered severe burns and had been rushed to hospital, an official with the Beijing Emergency Medical Center told reporters.
The cause of the blast is not yet known.
