A man who threatened to cause bloodshed at schools in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, turned himself in to police on Monday evening.

The 43-year-old man from Chenzhou, Hunan province, is identified only by the surname Cao on the micro blog of Guangzhou police. The matter is under investigation.

Earlier media reports identified Cao by his full name, Cao Zaifa.

Angered by inadequate compensation for demolition projects in his hometown, Cao made the threat and claimed the targets of his assault included kindergartens and a university in Guangzhou, Nanfang Daily, a newspaper based in Guangzhou, reported on Monday.

The report said Cao arrived in Guangzhou on Saturday by car with two other people. Warnings about Cao spread online and caused concern on campuses.

One widely circulated warning included Cao's ID number, the type of car he might be using, and a photo.

Before voluntarily turning himself in to the police, Guangzhou authorities had instructed schools to take safety precautions. Some kindergartens contacted parents to ask them to pick up their children and keep them at home on Tuesday.

At Sun Yat-Sen University, students were informed of the threat and were asked to report immediately to the school if they found anything suspicious.
