President Xi Jinping has urged emergency services and medical workers to exert themselves in treating those injured in a stampede at a mosque in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region on Sunday.

At least 14 people were killed and 10 others injured, four of them critically, at a religious event to commemorate a late religious figure in a mosque in Guyuan, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The stampede occurred at about 1 pm as food was being handed out as part of the religious ceremony.

Xi instructed the local government to work quickly to provide medical treatment and other care to those in need.

Premier Li Keqiang and top political adviser Yu Zhengsheng also urged a swift and efficient response to the incident, according to the Xinhua report.
