BEIJING - Political advisors have urged universities to adopt practical, hands-on subjects, and a more competent faculty to improve the quality of China's higher education.

These suggestions were raised Thursday during a bi-weekly consultation session presided over by Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the top political advisory body.

"Despite measures to improve universities ... economic and social development, outdated management, and education-quality imbalance remain issues," said a statement released after the meeting.

Other floated ideas included reasonable enrollment quotas and scientific and long-term performance evaluations.

The statement also said higher education institutes in the underdeveloped central and western regions, and agriculture, forestry and teacher-training needed more support.
