"There is no scientific evidence to prove transgenic food can do any harm to consumers."

Chen Junshi, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering at the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, speaking on Friday in response to media reports that transgenic soybeans can lead to cancer. Wang Xiaoyu, vice-secretary-general of the Heilongjiang Soybean Association, earlier told China Central Television that more than 90 percent of soybean oil, the major edible oil for Chinese consumers, is made from transgenic soybeans, which may be closely linked to the increasing number of cancer patients in China.
