Olympic champion Liu Xiang to skip Universiade 2005 (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-06-16 00:36 Olympic 110 meters hurdles
gold medallist and co-world record holder Liu Xiang of China will miss the 23rd
Universiade 2005 to be held in Izmir, Turkey on August 10-21, said an official
of Chinese University Sports Federation (CUSF) here Wednesday.
Wang Gang, the director of the competition department of CUSF, told Xinhua
that Liu, who chose to compete in the world athletics championship also to be
held in August, would miss the Universiade 2005.
Liu Xiang, the hurdler who won the first universiade gold medalon the track
and field for China at the 21st universiade 2001 held in Beijing, became the
national hero after claiming the first olympic track and field gold medal for
China when he won the title and tied the world record of 110 meters hurdles in
Athens last year.
"Despite some top athletes, such as Liu, who chose to attend other
international competition, we do not lack of talented athletes." said Wang, who
thinks the moral of the Chinese delegation will still be kept in a high level
despite the absence of Liu.
According to Wang, a group of athletes, including double Olympic champion
diver Guo Jingjing, Asian champion swimmer Qihui and her teammate Olympic gold
medalist Luo Xue Juan will compete in the 23rd Universiade, which would ensure
the Chinese delegation to keep on dominating the Universiade.
China took the first place at the gold medal table for two consecutive
Universiade with 54 gold medals in 2001 and 41 in 2003.
