John Bull這個名字是怎么來的呢？英國人和狗的關系非常密切，特別是斗牛犬 (bulldog)，所以，十八世紀初，作家兼御醫(yī)Dr. Arbuthnot寫了一本《約翰牛傳》(The History of John Bull)，主張英、法和平相處，書中主角的名字就叫作John Bull，作者用他來代表英國。從此以后，John Bull成了英國和典型英國人的代名詞。
例如：
His ruddy countenance and stout figure made him look a genuine John Bull.
他面色紅潤，身材胖碩，看起來就是個典型的英國人。
