Fujian province is looking for ways to increase its cooperation in the field of communications with Taiwan, including through wireless services in several cities in the province, and increasing strategic cooperation by cross-Straits communication companies, the Pingtan Times reported on Feb 22.

In addition, the province also plans to promote the use of same-fee standards in telecommunications with Taiwan, in the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, a county-level island that is the mainland's closest place to Taiwan. Same-fee services for phone cards are already in place in some parts of the island.

Fujian has some new projects involving the use of direct oceanic cables between its city of Xiamen and Kinmen, Taiwan, and its Fuzhou and the small city of Tamsui, just north of Taipei.

For many, this further communication cooperation across the Straits has a promising future. And, Fujian plans to put 50 billion yuan ($8 billion), as part of the 12th Five-Year Plan, to bring Internet coverage at the county-level and above.
