Pingtan county, an island in East China's Fujian province, saw fruitful results from this year's college entrance exam, or gaokao, with 754 candidates eligible to apply to first-tier universities, up 180 over last year.

As many as 1,952 candidates earned scores above the threshold of second-tier colleges, an increase from 2012.

A total of 4,272 candidates took the gaokao this year, 300 more than last year.

Chen Jiawei from Lanhua Middle School claims the top place in the Liberal Arts group with 587 points, while Lin Tao from Pingtan No 1 Middle School had the highest score in the Science group with 640 points.

The local college enrollment office reminded candidates to file online college applications in time.
