A fundraising campaign aims to provide subsidies for a total of 100 students with financial difficulties in Pingtan county, the Pingtan Times reported on Thursday, Aug 1.

Enterprises in the county will donate grants ranging from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan ($489.6 to $816) for low income college freshmen recommended by Pingtan's Party working committee.

The committee said that students who receive the minimum living allowance, or who are orphaned, from a single-parent family or have at least one disabled family member will be given priority.

An organizer who took part in a meeting for the campaign on Thursday said that it is the responsibility of society to take care of the next generation, and that he hopes the companies involved in the campaign will ensure that poverty does not deprive any Pingtan students of the opportunity to study.

At the meeting, the Fujian Tunnel Engineering Ltd agreed to subsidize 10 students.

Several enterprises in Pingtan - including the local branches of the Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Fujian Haixia Bank and Pingtan Rural Commercial Bank and the Pingtan Electricity Power Company - are taking part in the campaign.
