Taichung, Pingtan pledge to bolster relations

A delegation from Taichung city of Taiwan, headed by its mayor, Jason Hu, and his wife Shaw Hsiao-ling, visited Pingtan county in Fujian province on August 16, with the aim of exploring possibilities for cooperation.

The delegation, which included representatives of more than 50 Taiwan enterprises, was the largest such delegation involving Taichung and Pingtan.

During a discussion with the visitors, Gong Qinggai, director of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, said that Pingtan has improved its infrastructure following three years of development since it was established as mainland's first economic zone opening up to Taiwan.

He also said that Pingtan will strive to carry out more favorable policies and create a sound investment environment for Taiwan business people.

Jason Hu said that Taichung hopes to be friends with Pingtan "forever."

He also said that the city has been a "pioneer" in cross-Straits communications, and the Pingtan-Taichung marine route is the first official cross-Straits sea route, achieving good results since it opened a year ago. In addition, while there has been a decline in the number of tourists arriving in the ports of Keelung and Kaohsiung, Taichung has seen a steep jump, which can be attributed to the Haixia, a high-speed passenger ferry sailing between Pingtan and Taichung.

The Haixia started its involvement in postal delivery in January and has transported 30 tons of international mail and packages from Fujian province to Taichung. Hu promised to speed up the construction of a mail sorting center in Taichung as a way of expanding cooperation.

He also praised Pingtan's achievements in creating an eco-friendly environment.
