The Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone is in talks with a Taiwan submarine cable company to build Asia's largest Internet data center (IDC) in the island county of Fujian province.
Chen Jinbao, deputy general manager of the Taiwan International Gateway Corporation (TIGC), revealed the plan during a pre-investment inspection tour to Pingtan on September 10.
He said that there are two conditions – concerning the soil quality and power supply - that have to be addressed before they can commit to building the IDC.
Last year, TIGC was involved in the construction of the Tamsui-Fuzhou submarine cable, which is the first ever cross-Straits submarine cable directly linking Taiwan and Fujian province.
The establishment of an IDC in Pingtan will actively boost communication between cross-Straits information-based industries, and Gong Qinggai, director of the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, said that the county will do its utmost to launch the project in collaboration with TIGC.
