Laoshan district has a land area of 395.8 square kilometers, a sea area of 3,700 square kilometers, and a coastline of 103.7 kilometers. Its registered population is 249,000 (2011 census).

By the end of 2011, its GDP reached 36.47 billion yuan with 10.9% in growth; tax revenue reached 14.27 billion yuan with 19% in growth; general budget revenue reached 3.92 billion yuan with 34.1% in growth.

Laoshan boasts of the city’s essential recreational facilities including Qingdao International Exhibition Center, Qingdao Stadium, and Qingdao Theater, as well as numerous state-level and provincial-level scientific research institutes, colleges and universities, including Qingdao Institute of Biomass Energy and Bioprocess Technologyat Chinese Academy of Sciences, the State Oceanic Administration and Qingdao University.

The district is home to a group of self-innovative enterprises including Haier, and also introduced in a number of Fortune 500 companies. High-tech industry is developing rapidly here such as electronic appliances, bio-pharmacy, software, and new material. As one of the nation’s first demonstration zones for intellectual property rights, Laoshan has two state-level centers for post-doctoral studies, and five persons elected into the nation’s ‘Thousand Talents’ program.

It also has 46 key provincial-level labs, 4 state-level research centers for engineering technology, and 121 newly verified high-tech companies. Laoshan is one of the most energetic and competitive districts in the province. There are five listed companies and 83 financial enterprises in the district. Laoshan has a state-level 5A scenic spot, three 4A scenic spots, and has successfully organized a series of influential events such as the International Qingdao Beer Festival.
