George Weah to hold farewell match (Xinhua) Updated: 2005-06-11 15:48
Former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah Saturday will hold a
farewell match in Marseille where he ended his European playing career four
years ago.
"I'm no longer a professional player but football is still partof my life,"
said the 38-year-old.
Weah, the 1995 African, European and World Footballer of the Year, reached
his peak with AC Milan between 1995 and 2000.
After leaving Olympique Marseille, Weah then played for Al Jazirah in the
United Arab Emirates.
Those who will feature in the farewell match include France's Zinedine
Zidane, 2004 European Footballer of the Year Andrei Shevchenko and Chelsea's
striker Didier Drogba.
"He's an example all over Africa," said Drogba. "I was too young to play with
him so this farewell match is a dream come truefor me."
Weah, a widely respected figure in his country, is moving from football to
politics, planning to contest the presidential election due in Liberia by
October
