They may be wet, even a bit briny, and it might be hard to find a matching pair, but you won't find Nike Inc. shoes cheaper anywhere.
The maker of athletic gear lost 45,756 shoes -- or 22,878 pair -- that fell off a storm-tossed container ship in December on the way from Long Beach, California, to Tacoma, Washington. Now beachcombers are finding them along the Pacific coast of the Canada and the United States.
According to Seattle oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer, who is cataloging Nike beachings in Washington state, the aquatic parade of shoes should continue to land along the British Columbia coast in Canada and meander to Alaska's Aleutian Islands since they abandoned ship near Mendocino, California.
Nike says the shoes will be perfectly usable, once dried, but pairs were not tied together, most likely preventing a glut of free shoes that might dampen sales. The first ones found in Washington state were both lefts and came in different sizes.
Nike spokesman Lee Weinstein said, "If you can't find a match, send the shoe back to us and we'll recycle it." Nike grinds down old shoes to use as athletic field surfacing.
Most of the lost shoes were made for children, Weinstein added, noting the company was fully insured against loss.
