Organisers of cinema's top honours, the Oscar, have called for 87 countries around the world to submit entries for next year's best foreign film award.
The call marks an early start for Hollywood's frenzied annual kudos season which has been moved forward with the 2004 Academy Awards taking place in February, about a month earlier than usual. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is asking for the official national entries to be submitted by October 15 in order to qualify for the 76th annual Academy Awards. Eligible movies must be produced in a language other than English, and must have played in commercial theatres in their home countries for at least seven days between November 2002 and September 2003 to qualify for the awards. Nominations for next year's Oscars will be unveiled January 27 and the awards will be handed out on February 29, 2004, at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.
